Webinar on IMF's Regional Economic Outlook for MENA :Safeguarding Macroeconomic Stability amid Continued Uncertainty

 

The IMF-Middle East Center for Economics and Finance (IMF-CEF) and the IMF’s Middle East and Central Asia Department (MCD) held a joint webinar titled “Regional Economic Outlook for MENA: Safeguarding Macroeconomic Stability amid Continued Uncertainty” on May 23, 2023.

Mr. Paulo Drummond, Director of the CEF, gave opening remarks and Ms. Chiraz Labidi, Senior Economist at the CEF, moderated the event. The speakers, Ms. Sahra Sakha and Mr. Thomas Kroen, are economists at MCD.

Ms. Sakha started by highlighting recent economic developments in the MENA region. She then spoke about the 2023 outlook and risks. She ended by speaking about policy priorities.

Mr. Kroen then spoke about monetary policy in the MENA region. He first talked about monetary policy instruments and recent actions. Then he spoke about the monetary policy transmission mechanism. Lastly, he spoke about policy recommendations.

The floor then opened for discussion with a diverse audience from the region, including participants from the public sector, the banking and business community, academia, as well as representatives from the diplomatic corps, offices of international and regional organizations in the region, and the civil society.

In closing, Ms. Labidi thanked the speakers for sharing their insights on the economic outlook of the region and members of the audience for the lively discussions.
