Webinar on NEET in MENA: Lessons from Morocco's Labor Market

The International Monetary Fund-Middle East Center for Economics and Finance (IMF-CEF) and the IMF’s Middle East and the World Bank (WB) held a joint webinar titled "NEET in MENA: Lessons from Morocco’s Labor Market" on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. Mr. Moez Souissi, Deputy Director of the CEF, gave opening remarks and Ms. Hanene Belhaj, Senior Economist at the CEF, moderated the event. Ms. Federica Alfani, Economist at the World Bank, delved into the pressing issue of high NEET (Not in Employment, Education, or Training) rates among youth in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Using Morocco as a case study, she examined the evolving socioeconomic factors contributing to the NEET phenomenon and highlighted its persistent nature. Ms. Alfani also discussed key policy recommendations aimed at breaking the cycle of NEET status. The webinar concluded with an engaging discussion, featuring contributions from a diverse audience of public sector officials, academics, and representatives from the business community, civil society, and international organizations across the Arab world.
