Joint CEF - MCM Webinar on IMF’s Global Financial Stability Report Geopolitics and Financial Fragmentation: Implications for Macro-Financial Stability

On Wednesday, September 6, 2023, The IMF-Middle East Center for Economics and Finance (IMF-CEF) and the IMF’s Monetary and Capital Markets Department (MCM) held a joint webinar titled " Geopolitics and Financial Fragmentation: Implications for Macro-financial Stability".

 

Ms. Chiraz Labidi, Senior economist at the CEF, commenced the event with opening remarks. She then gave the floor to the speakers: Mr. Hamid Tabarraei, Mr. Junghwan Mok and Mr. Tatsushi Okuda, all economists from MCM.

Mr. Hamid Tabarraei initiated the discussion by highlighting the significant influence of geopolitical factors on the global financial landscape and elucidating the channels through which geopolitics and financial fragmentation can impact financial stability.

Mr. Tatsushi Okuda, then delved into the repercussions of geopolitical tensions on cross-border portfolio allocations and aggregate capital flows.

Mr. Junghwan Mok, provided compelling evidence regarding the effects of geopolitical tensions on banks and on cross-border remittances.

Mr. Okuda then elaborated on the effects of financial fragmentation on macro-financial stability. He subsequently ceded the floor to Mr. Tabarraei who wrapped up the presentation with key takeaways and policy recommendations.

The floor was then opened for discussion, engaging a diverse audience from the region including participants from the public sector, academia, representatives from the business community, civil society, and other international organizations.

In closing, Ms. Labidi conveyed her appreciation to the speakers for sharing the outcomes of their research on the implications of geopolitical and financial fragmentation on macro-financial stability. She also extended her gratitude to the audience members for their lively contributions to the discussions.
